Marble, limestone and slate

Key Information

Marble, is a metamorphic rock a granular limestone or dolomite(i.e., rock composed of calcium-magnesium carbonate) that has been recrystallized under the influence of heat, pressure, and aqueous solutions.

Limestone is a type of carbonate sedimentary rock . It is composed mostly of calcite and aragonite. Limestone forms when these minerals precipitate out of water containing dissolved calcium. Limestone often contains fossils which provide scientists with information on ancient environments and on the evolution of life.

Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash.

Much softer than granite, marble, limestone and slate are more suited for surfaces that are not under as much constant use as kitchen tops, such as bathrooms and fireplaces. Although sealed the same as our granite care, must be taken with spillages, as even mild acids such as perfume, toolpaste alcohol and carbonated drinks can etch the surface.

For peace of mind and the ultimate protection all our natural stone worktops are supplied sealed with Dry Treat Stain Proof. This means further applications of sealer by the end user are not necessary.

Note: Sealers do not protect the immediate surface of the stone and spillages should be dealt with immediately.

As with granite these materials are uniquely stunning and whilst glazed porcelain can produce some convincing copies there's nothing like the real thing!

A few examples of the huge amount of available materials are below.
